in the Continental United States that has been more influential in the history of the country than that of the West Line, otherwise known as the Mason - Dixon Line. It evolved around territory disputes between the Penn's and Calvert's in forming the colonies of Pennsylvania and Maryland. Blood had been shed before both colonies finally settled and allowed Jeremiah Dixon and Charles Mason to determine the actual boundary demarcation between 1763 to 1767. Nearly a century later, the boundary became the dividing point between the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War. Although Maryland stayed within the Union, it was due to political wrangling and in many cases martial law. Which brings us to Stone 108 between miles 104 and 105, it lies within the right of way of the former Cumberland Valley Railroad. The stone itself was not placed here by the original surveyors but is found to be an original stone, one of roughly 135 remaining along the roughly 230 mile boundary all quarried and shipped from England. The stone was perhaps moved from its original location some .33 miles away where sometime before 1902 the railroad found being used as a "horse block" by a local. The stone was set in a base of concrete as instructed by a surveyor working for the State of MD along the line. Sometime in the 1970's a gravel truck was struck by an oncoming southbound train and damaged the stone. Today, it remains as a visual reminder of this country's history and serves as monument for generations to come.</image:title><image:caption>NO BOUNDARIES COMPARE</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://thewrightphotographyofthings.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/20150522-img_0571.jpg</image:loc><image:title>EVENING SHUFFLE</image:title><image:caption>An evening shower passes to the north near the famed Mason Dixon Line on Norfolk Southern's Lurgan Branch on May 22, 2015. The train with CSX SD50 8575 leading runs alongside the West Virginia Route 9 Freeway for a few miles between Kearneysville and Shenandoah Junction. The bridge where this was taken is popular among local railfans as it currently only leads to an orchard the the highway separated when it was built and sees very little use.</image:title><image:caption>DUSK AT HOBBS</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2015-10-16T05:19:07+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://thewrightphotographyofthings.com/about-twpot/about/</loc><lastmod>2015-01-30T21:19:13+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>0.6</priority></url><url><loc>https://thewrightphotographyofthings.com/2015/01/29/mmid-one-year-later/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://thewrightphotographyofthings.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/cropped-20150116-img_3064.jpg</image:loc><image:title>cropped-20150116-img_3064.jpg</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://thewrightphotographyofthings.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/16297279932_637dbf277f_o.jpg</image:loc><image:title>16297279932_637dbf277f_o</image:title><image:caption>2015 MARYLAND MIDLAND</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://thewrightphotographyofthings.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/12160736705_c79bdfa271_o.jpg</image:loc><image:title>12160736705_c79bdfa271_o</image:title><image:caption>LEHIGH CATHEDRAL: It's a balmy 14 degrees with a stiff breeze blowing as the UBTT (Union Bridge–Taneytown), brings out a set of hoppers from the Lehigh Portland Cement Plant in Union Bridge on January 24, 2014. MMID 303 makes its last appearance in the blue and orange and within days, the engine would be sanded down and repainted into the Genesee &amp; Wyoming black, orange, and yellow scheme as CORP (Central Oregon &amp; Pacific Railroad) 2063, where the unit will be sent once its replacement arrives. This scene was captured from atop a cut that was made when the railroad built a new spur into the plant. The spur, which opened in 2007, eliminated the famous street running along Farquhar Street in town. The street running down Fauquier Street ceased in 2007 but the new spur offers this vantage point.
