H25.7 RANSON DELIGHT

The former Norfolk and Western Potomac River Bridge never saw much in terms of coal traffic under it’s namesake railroad but Norfolk Southern has routed empties destined to the mines of southwest Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia via the H Line. One such empty, train 747 is seen here crossing from a vantage along the C&O Canal on the Maryland side.
A photo 7 years in the making. The Norfolk Southern Office Car Special (OCS) crossing the Potomac River at Shepherdstown, WV. This train operates all over the system on frequent trips. I have never made it a priority to shoot. I even once bypassed it to chase a train up the CSX Lurgan seeing the headlights of the OCS in the distance. Other times I have been at work or doing something else. When I did have opportunities to photograph it, I would get screwed. I’ve mentioned to friends that this train is a curse to me. Not today!
