The Dunkard Church at Antietam witnessed some of the most vicious fighting of the American Civil War on the morning of September 17th 1862. Today it sits quietly as it did before that terrible day but this time as a reminder of the battle fought in America’s bloodiest day.

It’s hard to imagine that this peaceful quiet scene was host to some of the most significant carnage of the Antietam battle. Wave after wave of 10,000 Union troops crossing and retreating back across this stone bridge while only 400 Confederate troops and artillery rain lead down from the heights above. Finally, the Federal troops succeed in crossing Antietam Creek and begin driving back the enemy. In their wake, the blood had been shed and the creek turned red on this the bloodiest day in American History, September 17th, 1862.
